It's no secret that the business side of technology struggles with diversity in its workforce, but what many people don't realize is that much of the problem lies in the failure of traditional diversity training. Judith M. Williams discussed the innovative solutions she has learned to provide as a consultant in this arena at IEEE N3XT® Keynotes & AlphaLab Gear International Hardware Cup last month during her talk, "Building For Inclusion." "When we feel included...we've been invited to the party, and someone has asked us to dance," Judith began. During her talk, she discussed many of the less obvious ways that companies can achieve this kind of inclusion for women and minorities. She mentioned an anecdote about her time at Google, wherein a new building including sixty-two conference rooms named after scientists only included two rooms that had been named after woman scientists. After employees complained, Google renamed the rooms so that women were represented in 50% of the conference room names. "What had been a symbol of exclusion [became] an opportunity for inclusion," she concluded.
