Alternative Methods and Optimization Techniques for Vector Modulation

John Hansen, Agilent Technologies

Many applications in communications and radar require modulation of vector (with I and Q components) signals. As systems become more complex these modulated signals become wider in bandwidth, higher in carrier frequency and require very few imperfections in the modulation. This paper will cover different vector modulation techniques and compare their advantages and disadvantages. It will also address methods for up and down conversion of vector modulated IF and RF waveforms. Lastly, it will explore different ways to optimize the baseband signal path to minimize the effects of I and Q signal path mismatches.
