IEEE RAS North American Summer School on Surgical Robotics

4th Biennial North American Summer School on Surgical Robotics

Minimally invasive surgery has the potential to reduce costs, decrease pain, and shorten hospital stays. Robotics, image-guided interventions, and surgical simulation are key technologies to achieve this potential, and have already formed a corpus of knowledge not available in a single school. The North American Summer School in Surgical Robotics is a biennial school established to bring this knowledge to graduate students and post-docs.

The main objective is to introduce up to 62 trainees (PhD students and postdoctoral fellows) to the multidisciplinary research fields of surgical robotics, image-guided medical interventions, and surgical simulation and training. The intention is to provide lectures, hands-on laboratory experience, and opportunity for informal interaction with clinicians and leading experts from academia and industry. By this approach, we propose to educate trainees in the state of the art and current trends in surgical robotics, image-guided interventions, and surgical simulation. An international faculty of instructors will be specifically recruited for this event.

The lectures were given by internationally-renowned researchers, including several from Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, and West Penn Allegheny Health System.
