Compact Disc Audio Player, 1979 1979 8 Benelux On 8 March 1979, in Eindhoven, Netherlands, N.V. Philips' Gloeilampenfabrieken, which means "light emitter manufacturing" demonstrated for the international press a Compact Disc Audio Player. The demonstration showed that it is possible by using digital optical recording and playback to reproduce audio signals with superb stereo quality. This research at Philips established the technical standard for digital optical recording systems. In honor of this work, the IEEE Frederik Philips Award was established in 1971 through an agreement between N.V. Philips Gloeilampenfabrieken (now called Philips Electronics N.V.) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.
