Solar Splash began in 1994 as a competitive event for students studying mechanical engineering to work on a project that focused on alternate energy sources, namely, solar energy. The competition has grown over the years to an internationally recognized event, bringing in participants from all over North America and in countries from almost all other continents. In recent years, the Solar Splash has been regarded by students and professors of engineering as an excellent way to gain hands-on experience in the field and a brilliant addition to an engineering student's resume. The event has also become more interdisciplinary, broadening its participation to include both mechanical and electrical engineering students as the solar energy technology matures over the years. We explored some of the work done by previous Solar Splash contestants and what they thought of the competition.

Solar Splash is an annual event sponsored by IEEE's Power Electronics Society. Students studying mechanical or electrical engineering team up to create a solar-powered boat and use it in competitive events with other students from around the world.
