About the Event:

Part of a new series of online events conceived by IEEE TechEthics and UN-DESA as a way to facilitate and share technology solutions and promote substantive discussions among policy makers, engineers, legal experts, ethicists, social scientists, and others on a variety of topics related to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. This event in the series focused on Global Environmental Solutions.

About the Speakers:

- Bruno Lequesne received the Certified-Engineer degree from Centrale-Supélec, France, in 1978, and the PhD degree in electrical engineering from the Missouri University of Science and Technology, USA, in 1984. He worked for 30 years in the automotive industry on transportation electrification and industrial drives before starting his own consultancy, E-Motors Consulting, LLC, in 2014. His automotive involvement includes working at General Motors Research Laboratories (1984-1999) and Delphi Research Laboratories (1999-2006). In September 2006, he became Group Manager, Delphi Powertrain Advanced Engineering (2006-2009). After a year at the University of Alabama, he joined Eaton Corporate Research & Technology group to focus on the electrification of commercial vehicles and advanced industrial drives (2010-2014). Since starting his consultancy, he has contributed to the transportation, automotive, aerospace, renewable energy, and general industry. He is also an expert witness with courtroom experience. Dr. Lequesne holds 53 patents. He received eleven Best Paper Awards, eight from the IEEE Industry Applications Society, including two Transactions Paper Awards, and three from the Society of Automotive Engineers, including the Colwell (2000) and the Bendix (2007) awards. He is an IEEE Fellow (1997), and received the IAS Kliman Innovator Award (2007) and the IEEE Nikola Tesla Award (2016). He currently chairs the IEEE Transportation Electrification Community.

- Alois Posekufa Mhlanga is an Industrial Development Officer in the Department of Energy at the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). He has over eighteen years of experience in the sustainable-energy and climate-change field. He currently manages UNIDO’s renewable-energy projects in Africa and Asia. He is responsible for flagship programmes such as the design and creation of the ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency and the Global Cleantech Innovation Programme. Before joining UNIDO, Mr. Mhlanga was a Renewable Energy Expert at the African Development Bank managing a vast portfolio of renewable-energy and sustainable-energy investment projects across Africa. Before that, he was the principal sustainable-energy expert at the Southern Centre for Energy and Environment and a part-time lecturer at the University of Zimbabwe for the Master of Science in Renewable Energy programme.

- Shantanu Mukherjee is a micro-economist interested in poverty, inequality, health and sustainability. Apart from cross-cutting SDG analysis, his current work focuses on strengthening the science-policy interface and enhancing the impact of science, technology and innovation on the SDGs. His team leads the UN support for the Global Sustainable Development Report (GSDR) and the Technology Facilitation Mechanism (TFM). Before this, he led the research and writing unit of the United Nations’ Development Programme’s (UNDP) flagship Human Development Report, focusing especially on the analysis of jobs and livelihoods in the context of the sustainability transition and rapid technological change. Prior to that he was head of UNDP’s MDG (Millennium Development Goals) policy work, working directly with many developing countries. Some of his most interesting assignments during this period were with Bangladesh, Colombia, Indonesia, Jordan, Liberia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Togo and Yemen. Shantanu began his career with the Indian Government in different areas of finance as well as development policy planning and implementation. He earned a PhD in Economics from Princeton University and also holds advanced degrees in Public Policy and Physics.

- Rudi Schubert is the Director, New Initiatives for the IEEE Standards Association, and lead for its Energy Practice. He leads the IEEE Industry Connections program, operating consensus building interest groups across a portfolio of emerging issues and topics including sustainability, renewable energy, autonomous and intelligent systems, big data, next generation vehicle technologies and many others. Before joining the IEEE, Rudi was a principal engineer for EnerNex, providing technical expertise on technology standards and testing programs to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). He also spent twenty years in progressively expanding leadership roles with Telcordia Technologies (formerly Bellcore) establishing technical criteria and implementation methodologies that become a mandated compliance and certification standard used by US telecom carriers for technology deployment. Rudi has a 25+ year record of leading, developing and implementing industry standards and testing programs, and facilitating teams to achieve consensus expectations for functional performance, interoperability, product robustness and safety. He holds bachelors and masters degrees in mechanical engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, New Jersey.

- Mark A. Vasquez (moderator) is a Certified Association Executive (CAE) with over 25 years of experience in association management at IEEE. He currently serves as the senior program manager for IEEE TechEthics, a program that drives conversations about the ethical and societal impacts of technology. In this capacity, he works to develop relationships with others in the technology ethics community, produces events, convenes thought leaders, and more. Mark is an engineering graduate of The Cooper Union.
