Leveraging Hackathon for Sustainability: (1) Climatechain & (2) OneAquaHealth

Two Hackathons with winners to be announced at IEEE Global Emerging Technologies (iGET) 2026: ClimateChain leverages blockchain technology to address climate challenges; OneAquaHealth aims to increase the sustainability of urban freshwater ecosystems.

1. IEEE ClimateChain Hackathon

Climate change is one of the most urgent challenges facing our planet today. Governments, corporations, and communities are searching for innovative technologies that can improve transparency, accountability, and efficiency in climate action. The ClimateChain Global Hackathon 2026 invites innovators, developers, researchers, and climate enthusiasts from around the world to build solutions that leverage blockchain technology to address real-world climate challenges.

Participants will design and prototype innovative tools that can improve carbon markets, renewable energy systems, sustainable supply chains, and climate data transparency. By combining blockchain, AI, IoT, and climate science, teams will create solutions that empower organizations and policymakers to make data-driven decisions for a sustainable future.

This global hackathon aims to accelerate the development of trustworthy, decentralized, and scalable climate solutions that can support the goals of global climate initiatives and international sustainability frameworks.

2. OneAquaHealth-IEEE Hackathon

Urban aquatic ecosystems are extremely relevant connectors between people, animals, and plants, making cities more biodiverse and sustainable. Yet these ecosystems often face a lack of space, vegetation removal, artificialization, and other urbanization processes. This degradation can lead to numerous disservices to humans in regard to emerging pathogens, decreasing disease resistance, climate change impacts, and other health concerns in cities.

OneAquaHealth aims to improve the sustainability and integrity of freshwater ecosystems in urban environments.  By investigating the interconnection between ecosystem health and human wellbeing, the project will identify early-warning indicators and enhance environmental monitoring with AI-assisted tools. As a result, the project will support decision-makers in making adequate and timely decisions as well as effective measures to restore aquatic ecosystem health and promote OneHealth.

Winners will be announced at the IEEE Global Emerging Technologies (iGET) Conference in Irvine, CA, US on Oct 24, 2026.
