Billions of devices are expected and it is not uncommon to find a dozen or even a score of Internet-enabled devices in residences and offices around the world. We need to introduce and promote an ethic of software safety and extended maintenance to protect the users of these devices. Software updates must be assured of integrity before installation. Consumers have a right to expect support for the lifetime of the devices. What could possibly go wrong?
