6G Role in Agriculture
While autonomous machines are gaining attention on city streets today, agriculture has had GPS-enabled, automatically steered vehicles for over 20 years. Most modern farm equipment is, in fact, a rolling sensor platform with touchscreen interfaces and extensive automation capabilities that can position a single seed in the ground with centimeter-level accuracy. Beyond traditional equipment, a multitude of sensors, cameras, and controllers are working their way into the fields and barns used to produce food, fiber, feed, and fuel. All these tools are being connected to provide data for farmers to make better and faster decisions in the face of changing weather patterns, increased regulatory pressure, and greater public demand for crop production transparency. Consistent and reliable connectivity plays a crucial role in enabling this shift to data-driven agriculture; however, farming generally takes place in rural areas where cellular coverage is often spotty at best. This panel reviews today's main use cases around connectivity in agriculture and what the vertical needs from a 6G network.
