Micro-Apps Keynote: Modern RF Measurements and How They Drive Spectrum Analyzer Digital IF Processor Design

Dr. Gordon Strachan, Agilent Technologies

RF designers, marketing requirements and technology forces are dramatically increasing the challenges of signal measurement.  From smartphones to CW radars, the signals and signal environments are driving measurement tools to get better, faster, wider, and smarter.  This presentation will show how increasing signal complexity has spurred ever more sophisticated measurement architectures, evolving from simple swept to complex vector and real-time systems. For example the power of dynamically reconfigurable FPGAs and fast ASICs improves measurement performance through real-time signal corrections, faster frequency sweeps and averaging, and removal of noise power.  The same processing power gains can allow one analyzer platform to extend from swept analysis to vector signal analysis to real-time displays, triggering, and signal capture. This presentation will discuss both the measurement benefits and the lessons learned in creating and adapting a fast, flexible digital IF processor.
