Eta Kappa Nu is the IEEE's student honor society formed to recognize outstanding students in science, mathematical, and engineering fields designated by the IEEE. Students, alumni, and even professors who have shown consistent excellence in their field are recognized by this society. The IEEE provides ample opportunity for involvement in the society through award programs, conferences, and volunteer opportunities for members. The 2013 Eta Kappa Nu conference, hosted by Arizona State University, offered discussions about several aspects of engineering careers and how to secure them and what the future of some fields of engineering holds. James Bates lists the skill set that college students should boast on an engineering or computer-science focused resume. He discusses the importance of intelligence over experience, the role that continuous improvement plays in a career, and the attitudes that can hinder a person from performing their job to the best of their ability. James Bates has worked extensively in the field of electrical engineering, the subject in which he obtained his Master's Degree. He has worked for several large companies and is currently the Vice President and General Manager of the Analogs & Systems department of Freescale. He has also contributed largely to the Freescale Semiconductor project as his concentration when studying electrical engineering is in electro-magnetics.

James Bates, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Analogs & Sensors in Freescale, gives a talk on the skills necessary to succeed in today's engineering and computer science work environment.
