Understanding Probability of Intercept for Intermittent Signals

Richard Overdorf, Agilent Technologies

A number of test solutions are available for engineers to identify intermittent signals. The choice of technique can dramatically change the engineer’s ability to detect signals, a vital factor in a multitude of defense related fields such as surveillance, RADAR/EW, EMI, and MILCOM/SATCOM. Understanding POI (probability of intercept) for an instrument and specific setup conditions is a complex challenge for the engineer. This presentation will address the fundamental variables in the analysis of such signals as well as the techniques used to optimize instrumentation to find rare and/or low power signal events. The presentation will cover techniques from legacy swept tuned spectrum analysis to new capabilities that use advanced digital signal processing.
