IEEE MOVE 10th Anniversary - IEEE SusTech 2026

For 10 years, IEEE MOVE has provided short-term communications, computer, and power solutions in disaster areas, using a customized truck platform. When not providing mobile communications where most needed, MOVE supports STEM education outreach.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the IEEE MOVE program in the United States. The MOVE program is committed to assisting victims of and responders to natural disasters with short-term communications, computer, and power solutions. These temporary emergency relief provisions help people stay connected and ensure access to the help they need. Services include internet service, mobile phone charging, and providing lighting. Piloted in hurricane regions, using a customized heavy-duty truck platform, the IEEE MOVE program has a two-fold mission: Mobile Communications Support and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education outreach. IEEE volunteers can also provide technical assistance on site during the initial disaster recovery phase.

When not deployed for disaster relief efforts, the IEEE MOVE vehicle is taken to schools, fairs, and other venues to educate the public—showcasing leading technologies and raising awareness about the positive impact these technologies have on society.

IEEE is expanding this award-winning program to provide relief and outreach on a global scale. In July 2025, India launched its first MOVE vehicle, marking the program’s debut outside the United States. The next phase of deployment includes the Caribbean, which like India, is frequently affected by severe storms. Depending on local needs and preferences, the program may utilize smaller vehicles or a more modular “MOVE in a box” approach.
